IN 500 WORDS OR LESS PLEASE DISCUSS WHICH RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS OFFICE YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT AND WHAT YOU PLAN TO DO TO MEET THAT RESPONSIBILITY?
As the next State Representative, it is paramount that the laws enacted in the legislature are there to protect all citizens of New Orleans. I plan to address the following issues that are of interest to the citizens of District 97: public safety, economic development/recovery, education and juvenile justice. I fully support the reforms that are being made in our criminal justice system and the funding it takes to implement them. It is vitally important that we place essential resources in all facets of public safety and criminal justice. People want to feel safe and know they are protected. People want peace of mind. As your State Representative I will make sure the reforms continue and the funding is sufficient to protect all the citizens of this city.
I support a strong public education system. I will work to ensure children receive the best education possible and fund adult education programs to help foster a new culture of learning and opportunity. I support teacher rights, but also additional training and accountability measures to ensure we have the best educational system possible.
We are recovering and poised for growth. Churches and business are opening and more still need assistance. I will work with the LA Recovery Authority to get additional resources to support business growth and retention. We need to remove roadblocks that are preventing residential and commercial development, we need to make insurance available and affordable. I'll reduce red tape and get state money to this community and District 97.
Too many young children are filling up juvenile court on a daily basis and that must change. When we fail to educate the child, we end up jailing the adult...that must stop! We need to re-direct our priorities at the State. I will support programs such as intensive case management, mentoring and educational services to at-risk New Orleans youth. I will work with local and state leaders to ensure funding and resources to support recreational programs and initiatives that will decrease the high school dropout rate.
