New Orleans Municipal Offices

New Orleans is a home rule municipality with the same boundaries as Orleans Parish. The municipal offices are governed by the City Charter which may be amended by citizens voting on proposed provisions.

Mayor

One elected at large

4 year terms, 2012 + 2016, 2016 + 2020, etc., two terms limit

Salary: $140,000

Powers: The Mayor is the chief executive officer of the City. He exercises general oversight of all activities of City government and sees that the provisions of the City Charter, the ordinances of the City, and all other laws are enforced. He appoints the Chief Administrative Officer and the City Attorney and, with approval of a majority of all members of the Council, members of all boards. He submits annually to the Council for its consideration and approval an operating budget, a capital program and a capital budget. He attends Council meetings and has a voice in the proceedings and can call special sessions of the Council and veto ordinances.

City Council

Two elected at large, one each elected in districts A through E

4 year terms, 2012 + 2016, 2016 + 2020, etc.

Salary $70,000

Powers: All legislative powers of the City shall be vested in the Council. The Council has the right to levy any and all classes of taxes, excises, licenses, liens and fees necessary for the proper operation and maintenance of the municipality for the payment of debt, and for capital improvements, but no specific tax or service charge affecting real property or motor vehicles unless approved by a majority of the qualified electors voting in an election held for that purpose.
